How are we in September already? 😅 Here is a belated photo dump of my 51st August birthday celebrations 1 month ago today along with 5 + 1 birthday wishes & wisdoms. 🎂🍒💋♥️💃🏻🪩

1️⃣ Never forget the small stuff. Transitioning from radio DJ to #performancecoach was a massive shift that took up all my bandwidth the last 3 years that I forgot it’s the small stuff that make us sparkle & shine. August was the month I rekindled my love for running, yoga, dancing & singing… & now I finally feel like I am returning to my old self. What are some small things that make you YOU?

2️⃣ Your 50s are NOT the new 30s. Your 20s-40s were designed for acquisition & achievement. You were supposed to work hard & accomplish all that your energy & abilities could afford. Your 50s is the time to take all that wisdom & turn it into something NEW! So no, I don’t want to be 30 again. For the first time in my life, I feel like I’m finally living life on MY terms & it feels GREAT!

3️⃣ The 50s are definitely my Muscle Mummy era…. When you have youth on your side, it’s harder to stick to a routine when you’re easily distracted by fun things. But #perimenopause has revealed a newfound discipline I didn’t know I had. Now I track the macros, eat the protein, consume the fibre & strength train like my life depends on it! 💪🏼🏋🏻‍♀️👟

4️⃣ While it’s important to save for retirement & rainy days (like retrenchment 😬😱), what’s more important is investing in YOURSELF. Never stop learning and growing.📚👩🏻‍🎓

5️⃣ Enjoy live music at @jeffos_sg & spend time with friends… did you know aging well has much more to do with your social activities & friendships than wealth or good health! People with strong social bonds have a 50% higher chance of living longer than isolated people. Tag your bestie to tell them how much you depend on them for keeping you sprightly! 🕺🎸

6️⃣ Your attitude about aging really affects HOW you age. If you think getting old is scary, then it IS! Aging is a gift & I am going to celebrate it with joy & gratitude! 🙏🏼

One of the first changes you’ll notice in #perimen

One of the first changes you’ll notice in #perimenopause is how alcohol hits you differently than it used to. 🤪

As estrogen and progesterone bounce up and down, it affects gut motility, the gut microbiome, bile production and the way your digestive system responds to food and drink.

Alcohol can irritate the lining of the stomach, interfere with sleep (another common issue in perimenopause) and contribute to dehydration. That means more bloating, reflux, constipation and/or diarrhoea.

It doesn’t mean you can never have a cocktail or a glass of wine ever again… it just means being more mindful of how frequently you consume it. And then being sure to savour each sip when you do. 😅♥️

I for one have switched out my nightly glass of wine for floral tea or a homemade ACV spritzer with chia seeds. I still have a drink or two when I’m out but my limit is no longer “stop when I feel tipsy”. I’ve noticed 2 glasses of wine is my max. Three is borderline. Four is pushing it! 😆😅☠️

Perimenopause is less about “giving things up” and more about learning what works for the body you have now. It’s a transition. A reset. And, frankly, I think we should be celebrating it. 🕺🪩✨

Which is why I’ve been thinking… What if we threw parties for women in perimenopause? 🥂

Not another seminar about symptoms. Not another menopause event that frames women in this season as frumpy and boring.

But actual parties. (We’ll start early so you can be home and in bed by 11pm 😂)

Good food. Great music. A good boogie! Fabulous women (AND their men). Lots of laughter. A little mischief. Well made mocktails (and proper cocktails and wine too). And conversations about the things we’re all experiencing but don’t always talk about.

Because if we’re entering a new chapter, why shouldn’t we have a bloody good time doing it? 💋

My earliest memory of Dolly Parton is watching her

My earliest memory of Dolly Parton is watching her in the film 9 to 5 alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. And it left such an impression on me.

That women had to fight to be respected at the workplace, what could be achieved when women band together, and how you could be stuck working 9 to 5 OR choose to chase your dreams.

Here’s a series of inspiring quotes from the incomparable Dolly Parton whose work and generosity transcended music and touched the lives of so many.

I remember how during the Covid lockdown, she started an online video series reading bedtime stories to children. 🥹

She is such an incredible ray of light who literally sparkled and dazzled every time she spoke or sang… and it wasn’t just from the rhinestones.

#throwback to that time @matthewanixon and I were so heavily photoshopped for the cover story of Her World Brides 😂😂😂 before officially saying “I Do”, 8 years ago, today in his hometown Springfield, Missouri.

To celebrate the 8 years we’ve survived together here’s 8 #lovelessons we (try to) practice:
1️⃣Arguments should never be about being right, but about feeling understood.
2️⃣Apologies are not the end goal. Only the first step.
3️⃣Keep dating each other. Never take the other person for granted. Plan fun outings together.
4️⃣Communicate clearly and calmly… especially when your wife is in perimenopause! 😂
5️⃣Be prepared to change. Marriage makes you grow. Make sure it’s together and not apart.
6️⃣Stay interested in each other always. Encourage one another and be life-giving.
7️⃣Always receive the flowers, ladies. Never complain about them being “too expensive” or a “waste of money”. It’s the intention and thoughtfulness behind the flowers that matter most!
8️⃣Never stop laughing with each other. Humour is the best glue.

A night at the theatre is always the perfect excus

A night at the theatre is always the perfect excuse to get dressed up and take a bunch of photos with the many friends you meet on gala night. 🪩🎭

Timothy Sheader’s version of Jesus Christ Superstar was amazing - incredible vocals, explosive choreography and many dramatic tableaux creating imagery that will forever be etched in my memory. The weight of the final scene made all the more heavy by the stripped down staging.

The streetwear and rock styling made the whole story contemporary enough to make you think about how it relates to today’s troubled times.

How stardom is a double-edged sword - the media will adore you one day and persecute you the next. Also what those who stand up against tyrants put at risk for truth and justice. And the heavy price to pay for freedom.

To compare the stance taken in this musical to the biblical version is to miss the entire point. It isn’t designed to inspire religious fervour but introspection and action - the point of all theatre and art.

Underneath it all, this is a story about very human, worldly things.. political ambition, fear, loyalty, betrayal, power, love, suffering, sacrifice, suppression, tyranny, cowardice and the choices we make when we are caught between them.

It was also a reminder that every hero needs a villain … that sometimes it is our detractors who shape our destiny and can become the catalyst for both our destruction and resurrection.

Imagine a love so great, you create the most gorgeous restaurant to enshrine it and share it with others. 🥹♥️

This is @tamba.singapore , the beautiful African restaurant named after the owner’s late adopted older brother from Liberia. A talented footballer who proudly proclaimed to be the next Pele, died from a lung infection at the tender age of 19. 🥀

But his memory lives on through his favourite dishes, cocktails named after cheeky conversations and even a bar lovingly dotted with bumps to resemble his tribal scarifications.

It was the perfect place to celebrate my 51st birthday, to allow my taste buds to travel to places I’ve never been & now must visit and for my heart to be filled with warm hospitality, and stories of love and generosity. ♥️

Everything was exquisite (also delightfully spicy) but the steak we had was simply outstanding! Loved everything about this restaurant so much that I wanted to capture every detail. Swipe to see my unedited videos of PART 1 of my birthday night with the hubs @matthewanixon.
